2012: The First Intermittent Fasting Clinic in North America
Weight loss – so vital to improve health – is a goal most people are unable to achieve by themselves. It was clear to Dr. Jason Fung and Megan Ramos that conventional dieting was not an effective strategy. After extensive research, they began incorporating intermittent fasting strategies. This directly contradicted standard dietary advice at the time to eat 6-8 small meals throughout the day, but the science was clear that intermittent fasting was a time-tested, effective weight loss and health improvement intervention.
The initial results were simply astounding, and those with type 2 diabetes were quickly coming off all their medications. The first intermittent fasting clinic in North America was founded, the Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) clinic.

2016: The Obesity Code Released
Dr. Fung’s first book, The Obesity Code, is published which provides the scientific rationale behind using low carbohydrate diets and intermittent fasting for weight loss. Rather than focusing on the failed calorie counting methods, it provides insight into the hormonal theory of obesity and how intermittent fasting plays a key role. The book has sold close to a million copies and is one of the bestselling nutrition books of the last decade.
Later in 2016, Dr. Fung published The Complete Guide to Fasting which provides more practical guidance with intermittent fasting and how to incorporate it into a lifestyle with recipes from Megan Ramos.
2018: Intermittent Fasting for Type 2 Diabetes
Committed to doing ground-breaking research, the IDM published its first peer-reviewed paper in the British Medical Journal Cases demonstrating the therapeutic use of intermittent fasting for people with type 2 diabetes as an alternative to insulin therapy.
Due to its inherent effectiveness, intermittent fasting becomes the most Googled diet in 2019. The IDM program is rebranded as The Fasting Method (TFM) to make our expertise clear. In addition to an online program, individuals can obtain personalized fasting and nutritional guidance.
