Diabetes Success Story II – RC

We have had tremendous success reversing type 2 Diabetes in our Intensive Dietary Management Program.  We apply the same principles that we outline here for the treatment of obesity to type 2 diabetes since they are two sides of the same coin.

I wanted to share a nice letter I recently received from a reader, with her permission.  One thing I’ll tell you has always bothered me about type 2 diabetes.  All the ‘experts’ like the American Diabetes Association say that type 2 diabetes is a chronic progressive disease.  But that’s simply not true!  We see reversal of type 2 DM every single day in our program.

What do I mean?  If type 2 diabetes is a curable disease, but patients are getting worse, then endocrinologists (diabetes specialists like the ADA) must face the fact that they are not helping their patients.  They simply cannot face that fact.  So, instead, they lie to themselves that type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease and they are doing the best that they can.  Here’s a quote from the ADA

Fact: For most people, type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease. When first diagnosed, many people with type 2 diabetes can keep their blood glucose at a healthy level with oral medications. But over time, the body gradually produces less and less of its own insulin, and eventually oral medications may not be enough to keep blood glucose levels normal. Using insulin to get blood glucose levels to a healthy level is a good thing, not a bad one.

Using insulin is good?  Really?  Are we in Bizarro world where good is bad and bad is good?  The use of insulin means that the insulin resistance is extremely severe and is a very, very bad thing.  People who take insulin are at extremely high risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke.  But here’s the ADA saying that it is a good thing.  Either they think we are retarded, or they are retarded.

The truth is that diabetes is a curable disease.  Medications and insulin, though, cannot cure diabetes.  Intensive dietary management is the only answer.

Hi, Dr Fung.
I was just wanting to thank you for all off your help. I was diagnosed with diabetes in November 2013. With an HbA1c of 51 (8.3%) and a resting glucose of 8.4. My doctor wasn’t too hopeful for me but gave me 3 months before he put me on medication. I was overweight at 90kg did little exercise and ate whatever I wanted. After diagnosis I was following all my doctors’ advice but was still getting 12.4s. This caused me to search for help I knew
There must be more help for me. I spent hours on the internet and I changed my diet dramatically and started exercising regularly. I found you in the middle of January even though my diet was similar you had some extra advise for me I was so surprised that you replied to my email thank you so much. Fasting is such a key to beating diabetes I now fast twice a week I was so not looking forward to it the first time thinking I couldn’t do it but I did and I actually enjoy it!! . I had my 3 month check up a few weeks back and my HbA1c was 30 (5.2%)! My resting glucose 5.0. Everyone says my results have been amazing even extraordinary. I even had the dietician phone me to see what I was doing as my results were so good and she was rather negative towards my diet the first time we met. My cholesterol has come down and I’ve lost 17kg so far. I have only 5 more kg to lose to get to my ideal weight. I feel so much better with heaps of energy and I know that I have the key to ensure diabetes won’t get me. No one will be chopping my feet off.

Hi Dr Fung, Just gotta let you know that my dietician (who I didn’t actually use) recognised me today in the supermarket she thanked me so much for give her the link to your youtube lectures shes listened to all the obesity series and plan on listening to the rest shes been talking about it with her team and they are all looking into it. Apparently they have been hearing other reports of high fat low carb diets working to and are all going to a conference soon about it. She was really pleased to see me and wanted to know how I was going I was able to talk to her a lot about the diet plan and fasting etc. told her to check out your blogs too. She is very keen to see me again. I guess to check that im still alive lol but I thought that it was really encouraging that in New Zealand at least you’ve made a difference.  Things might be starting to change
Yay

Thanks very much RC.  Congratulations on reversing your diabetes.  I, too, have hope for change in New Zealand.  We’re working on North America, too, but so much resistance….

It is simply stunning to imagine that a disease such as type 2 Diabetes is entirely reversible without drugs, without surgery, and even without cost.  It only takes a little knowledge and dedication.  Is it easy?  No, not exactly.  But neither is getting your feet chopped off.
