Visual imagery and self talk
Coach Terri Lance examines how to move towards your personal goals
A number of experts who are studying how our minds work and affect how they affect how we feel have identified an important key to feeling better and reaching our goals. It’s a simple concept, but one that many of us have unintentionally been using as a barrier rather than for empowerment. Understanding and implementing this may positively affect your health and/or weight-loss journey, starting today!
Ready? Here it is. Your mind only uses two things to determine how you feel about anything: the visual imagery you provide it and how you talk to, and about, yourself. Although it may sound odd to describe your mind as controlling how you ‘feel,’ your feelings are definitely informed by and processed through your mind.
Let’s focus on how this concept relates to achieving your health and/or weight-loss goals.
If you want to lose 90 lbs and present your mind with images of you as obese and unable to move around comfortably, your mind sees this as reality and continues down this path. But if you present it images of your more lean, more active self, your mind begins to act upon this as reality.
And if what you are saying to yourself is that it is your fault that you are obese, that you cannot succeed with weight loss, or that you will always be obese, your mind takes these as truths and works to maintain and reinforce them. So, it makes sense to start talking about your body as capable of losing weight – that you have the ability to choose healthy foods or fasting, and that you appreciate your body’s healing abilities.
If your mind uses the visual images and words you choose to determine how to feel and how to act, you can’t afford to keep providing it with those that are negative. Instead, feed your mind with images and words that are positive, empowering and congruent with how you want to feel and how you want your future to be.
