“I was so proud when my doctor told me the changes I had made in my diet and lifestyle had mostly likely saved my life.”
After six kids and 30 years of weight, it was time to leave it behind. The weight wasn’t my reason for deciding to make a change, it was the ever-increasing dose of insulin and other diabetes drugs.
I hit a personal wall. I was using 140+ units of insulin a day, all while eating the ‘approved’ diabetic diet and still getting heavier every time I stepped on the scale. I wasn’t just sitting around either, I was singlehandedly remodelling a home by myself. I was building walls, laying tile, and painting every day. I kept getting bigger until I was over 200 pounds and knew it was time for a big change. This was in November of 2019.
I knew my body responded well to a ketogenic diet and started removing carbs from our family diet. We were not junk food eaters, so the things I got rid of were rice, bread, high glycemic vegetables, and most fruits. I threw the ‘approved’ diabetic diet out the window and my family and I started eating healthy fat, low-carb, and moderate amounts of protein. As the first of December approached, I already started seeing results.
When I began to do more research, I ran into Dr. Fung’s work and it resonated with me. I finally found a doctor who could explain what was happening in my body and how to change it. Starting December 1, 2019, I changed everything and even took my husband along for the ride. Within two weeks, I already had to decrease my insulin since I was having crazy low blood sugar incidents, which resolved immediately after decreasing my insulin and other medications.
I took myself off these medications and reduced my insulin intake without the help of a doctor (I don’t recommend it, always consult your physician). At the time, my regular endocrinologist had retired, and after speaking with the replacement I knew we weren’t going to be a good fit. He said something about keto and fasting being a bunch of nonsense. Between that and him being overweight, I was not going to be taking his word!
With lots of reading and a very good blood sugar monitor, I kept keto and added fasting. Then things REALLY started to happen. The weight fell off fast and I started feeling amazing! My joint paint was gone, I was sleeping better, and my blood sugars were getting better every day.
By March 1, 2020 I had lost nearly 30 lbs, but the weight loss was slowing down as I got closer to my goal of 160 lbs. I decided to join The Fasting Method to troubleshoot and see how I could make it to my next benchmark. While it was an investment, it was way less than a month of insulin, so it was an easy choice.
Coach Jeff was a great coach and partner. It was so helpful having someone to bounce ideas off of. He noticed things I might have missed, and he was willing to think outside the box to help me get my base numbers down and rid my body of all the stored glucose.
In March I had a trip scheduled to Harry Potter world in Florida and we talked about how to deal with eating there. It was easy and simple! Avoid the food carts, eat in the real restaurants, and keep keto. The trip was great! After, however, things took a bad turn.
In early April I had a small, annoying cough and chest congestion. In the blink of an eye, everything changed. The world went on lockdown, COVID-19 invaded our city, and I got sicker every day. My cough got worse and the tightness in my chest was unbearable. Tests were reserved for those in the hospital and I kept getting worse. Soon I had a double lung infection and was fairly certain I had the virus.
In the past whenever I was sick, my blood sugar went crazy high, 400+. This time, I maintained an average blood sugar of 112, which was good because it was one less thing to worry about. I was struggling to breathe and often coughed so hard I would fall over or throw up. I finally saw a doctor and was started on antibiotics, which had previously jacked up my blood sugar. But this time, nothing.
I stayed sick for a month, but during that time, I ate a keto-only diet and did not snack between meals. I was so proud when my doctor told me the changes I had made in my diet and lifestyle had mostly likely saved my life.
Thank you, Dr. Fung, Megan Ramos, and Coach Jeff for everything you do to bring fasting and healthy eating to more people every day. I have less than 3 pounds to go to reach my next goal of 150!
Even though people still look at me sideways when I say I’m fasting, no one can say I’m the same person as before. I can’t think of a reason I would ever go back to how I was before, because this lifestyle is so rewarding and so easy!
By The Fasting MethodFor many health reasons, losing weight is important. It can improve your blood sugars, blood pressure and metabolic health, lowering your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer. But it’s not easy. That’s where we can help.
