Dealing with Weight
“I’m a 44 year old mom of 5 gorgeous kids. I work full time, and our lives are very busy.
As long as I can remember I’ve struggled with my weight. I was a thin child, but then at about 10 years old the hormones started and I was never thin again. I have done everything to try and lose the weight, and a few times was successful and dropped a good portion of the excess weight. I was diagnosed with PCOS and have struggled with early menopause, hypoglycemia, anaemia, insomnia, and low B12 and D (needing prescriptions). I even had a roux-en-y gastric bypass in 2005. That helped me lose about 125lbs, but then we had another baby, lost jobs, and moved countries-and I felt helpless as my weight just climbed back up. Many of my friends would comment on how little I ate, you know because it didn’t look like I ate so little. One year, my daughter’s Quinceanera was coming, so I used MyFitnessPal religiously and worked out 4 times a week for 8 months. I lost about 30lbs, but keeping up with that was impossible.”
Life Doesn’t Stop
I have been struggling to eat low carb and high fat for the last year and had some success, but after even 6 months, it seemed to stop working. I gave up during quarantine, teaching my kids at home and making all their meals was not going to work. What made me the most upset was that when I went back to my doctor at the end of the 3-month quarantine, I had not gained any weight. I just felt like I would never win this fight. But I knew that I needed to cut out carbs again because I felt so bloated and in constant pain from a car accident.
A New Beginning
In June, I started listening to Dr. Fung’s podcasts on Spotify and started fasting in addition to keto eating. The Obesity Code made so much sense to me. To my surprise it was easy! I have lost about 32lbs since June 6th, and do not find fasting difficult. Usually, I will do 20/4 or OMAD, and maybe up to 48 hours. Last Saturday, I finished my first 72 hour fast! I was not even hungry and probably could have gone a while longer, but my husband and I were going on a date–and I want this to be a way of life, NOT something that interrupts it! I have found that if my diet has interfered with family life it frustrates me and I will give up. Fasting during the work week works out well for me, and I use the weekends to eat with them, I just try to keep it LC/HF.
The weight has been just melting off. I don’t have a scale, because I know it will distract me, but I have finally gone down past a size 18 for the first time in 14 years. I have messed up, but just try and get right back to fasting and eating healthy. I carry pink salt in my purse, and carry a thermos of black coffee to work with me everyday.
I am so grateful for this WOE, I know that the fasting method has helped me significantly more in the last 4 months than anything else I’ve ever done! I finally am in control and feel hopeful.
